St Jarlath's Dragons' Den

22nd Apr 2015
St Jarlath\'s Dragons\' Den

Over the Easter break the children in P5, 6 and 7 of St Jarlath’s PS were given the challenge to come up with a product to be entered into “St Jarlath’s Dragons’ Den”. The children had to research, plan, design and create a product that was made using junk and had at least one moving part. Pupils also had to prepare a pitch to go with their product to explain the science behind their creation, explaining how they made it and how it worked. The aim of this task was to get children involved in the making and creating process, and enhancing their understanding of basic scientific concepts as well as testing and improving their own work.

The standard of entries across the three classes was fantastic, entries ranged from rocket launchers and kerbie karts to solar powered beacons and elastic powered cars.

Three finalists were chosen from each of the classes as well as one overall winner.

P5 finalists were Molly Haughey, Jude Lavery and Roise Mullan.

P6 finalists were Gemma Fox, Ella Haynes and Jack Keating.

P7 finalists were Aoibheann Early, Hannah Lavery and Katie Comiskey.

The Dragons had a very tough decision as the standard was so high, but eventually they decided that the overall winner was Jack Keating who created a solar powered beacon and was able to explain how he made his product and the science behind it. The 'Dragons' were very impressed with all the research and hard work that the children had done, especially at this busy time of year. Wonderful work by all of the pupils and parents of St Jarlath’s!
